Educational Programs

For nearly 30 years, Sam Castner has shared his passion for metalwork through educational programs that welcome learners of all ages. His workshops create a welcoming, hands-on space where participants can explore creativity, learn new skills, and experience the satisfaction of working with metal in a thoughtful and encouraging environment.

Exploring Ecology through Metal:
The Monarch Butterfly and Milkweed.

A hands-on creative workshop where students of all ages can engage in learning basic metal fabrication skills while designing and building public art. There is a symbiotic relationship between milkweed and the monarch where planting native flowering shrubs or flowers as food sources. This program discusses the biology, environmental factors, and how we can all make a difference to help reverse human impacts on the now critically endangered Monarch butterfly.

Collaborative Cardboard Animals:
STEAM learning workshops with recycled materials

Students ages 8+ create animal sculptures from concept to sketch, to final project. We learn about the selected animals environments, and study shapes, forms, and how to work materials to best represent these animals in their 3D form. During the sessions students learn how to translate their own 2D sketches into larger than life 3D art. While working and collaborating in group instructional teams, we all learn to use various tools and safe processes to create unique hands-on learning programs. Students get to learn about the importance of teamwork, upcycling materials, hand-eye coordination, the environment, and engineering skills as they build their sculptures.
